New Populations of Celestial Pearl Danios discovered

Myanmar Fisheries Authorities have discovered a number of additional populations of Celestichthys margaritatus. The new populations are found in streams around Hong Pong village and within the near area.  The fish is typically found in areas of deep forest.  In some areas, 750 specimens can be trapped in a given day.

The original population of the fish has been exploited to near extinction.  Hopefully new populations and captive breeding will save this fish and establish it as an aquarium staple.  Until the populations are better understood and captive breeding more established.  It is not recommended to keep this fish unless you have explicit plans on breeding specimens.

They actually are not in as bad shape as they were made out to be. The person who originally found them spread those rumors to try to keep others from collecting them and to try and keep the price from dropping (which it did). A lot of people have had success breeding them, finding them very easy actually. A source told me that some asian fish farms have some, so hopefully farmed fish will be available soon, rather than wild caught.

. . . the price did drop is what I meant, not that the person spreading rumors kept it from dropping.
